What an absolutely gorgeous & delightful all-original Edwardian period sapphire & diamond ring! My heart flutters looking at this special antique beauty!
Circa 1910-1915, this British signed 'L.W.&G.' (Lawson Ward & Gammage Ltd) jewelry company ring is what the Edwardian era was all about: delicately designed, floral-like in appearance, featuring beautifully cut & placed gemstones and diamonds set within both yellow & white metals.
Around for over 150 years, L.W.&G. of London, England has been crafting superior jewels, establishing a 'reputation for high quality, bespoke fine jewellery'. This dainty & eye-catching beauty is every bit 'bespoke', likely one of just a handful made, set with a stunning hexagonal-cut natural blue sapphire.
The sapphire, deep & strongly saturated violetish-blue in color, measures approximately 6.50 x 5.50 x 3.58mm hexagonal, weighing a calculated 1.01ct. With excellent 'eye-clean' clarity, this amazing gem is so clean & so uniquely cut that we had to have our gemologist confirm it was indeed natural as she's just so perfect! Set within a millegrained bezel, the sapphire is surrounded by diamond 'petals', 12 in total, each containing a bead-set single-cut diamond. Additionally, on either side of the band are 3 more single-cut diamonds, for a total diamond weight of 0.15ct. These little sparklers average eye-clean VS-SI clarity and white G-I color. It is noted in the appraisal that one diamond is 'slightly chipped', as to be expected with old diamonds & antique pieces. We cannot locate the 'chip' and the integrity of the ring is not harmed by it.
The ring is stamped with '18 CT' and has been acid-tested to confirm both the 18kt gold content and the 'white' metal, which tests as rhodium-over 18kt gold. Additionally, the ring is hallmarked with 'L.W.&G', and what appears to be '74' or a '7' + an 'A' or '4' like symbol, and what we can make out as either 'I92', 'I9Z' or 'Z6I'. We're not quite sure what these numbers signify, but you can see our enlarged images of them in photo #8!
Currently the ring is an easily sizable US size 9 (18.95 to 19.0mm inner circumference). The hallmarks should remain intact with sizing as they are stamped fairly high up within the shank.
If you're seeking an engagement ring that holds something other than a diamond as its main gem, consider this to be not only the perfect sapphire engagement ring, but also your 'something blue'. Of course, if you simply adore antique pieces and this Edwardian darling pulls on your heartstrings, treat yourself today!
