Astounding magnificence! My jaw dropped when I first saw this stunning Victorian (circa 1890) 'crescent moon and sun' pendant. A rare combination of sun & moon, from its size to its brilliant blue sapphire gems and diamonds, I was agog marveling over its beauty. I've seen lovely crescent pins, brooches and some smaller pendants over the years, but this piece... well, this is a first. WOW!
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, dating back to the second millennium BC, the crescent moon is the oldest known symbol to mankind, becoming most popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods. Symbolizing change, crescent moons celebrate the spirituality & glorification of the Feminine Moon Goddess and are associated with female empowerment. Traditionally decorated with seed pearls and paste stones, there are also dazzling finer collection pieces in existence composed of gems including rubies, sapphires, topaz and of course, diamonds.
This incredible example of beloved Victorian crescent jewelry truly captivates. Not only is it a crescent moon, but it also features a large 'sun' made of rock crystal quartz. The sun itself symbolizes wisdom, love and intellect. From the Freemasonry perspective, the Sun and Moon, together symbolize the unity of opposites, the alternation and the balance of the day and night, light and darkness, white and black.
Acting as its own sun-catcher (how fitting), beams of rainbow light bounce joyfully from the pendant in the sunshine, and we've tried to capture this radiance in our pictures, though no camera compares to what you'll see with your own eyes. The sapphires glow brilliant blue, 9 in total, with an approximate combined carat weight of 2.25ct. Their color is strong, rich royal blue, and their clarity remarkable, especially given their age in this piece. Many gems dating back to the period show abrasions and nicks, but these sapphires are in excellent antique condition. They are predominantly oval to fat-cushion in shape, with the smaller gauging about 2.50mm oval, and the largest around 4mm.
Adjacent to each sapphire are a pair of Old European/Mine cut diamonds (they are very tiny and difficult to decipher the cut), 18 in total and estimated to total approximately 0.25ct. They do have some natural inclusions under magnification, though brilliantly fiery to the naked eye. The rock crystal quartz (tested) measures a large 19mm in diameter and 7.50mm deep, with an estimated carat weight of 5.42ct. Very lightly marked with some hair-sized 'scratches', she is eye clean and as mentioned above, dazzles in the sunlight.
The pendant itself is unmarked and acid tests for no less than 9ct gold. We've added a very lovely 14kt yellow gold chain that measures 18 inches long and is 2mm wide. The crescent moon measures from tip to tip 54.60mm, or 2.15 inches. It is substantial in size. The overall weight of the pendant and chain is 10.20g, with the pendant itself weighing 9 grams.
These are the pieces that make jaws drop. Mine did. And I think yours will too. She's my new favorite darling and for good reason. You don't find this crescent moon + sun combo very often... rare, regal and remarkable.
