What a beautiful Art Deco piece!! Onyx, diamonds, cultured pearl & platinum - this is a feminine yet fabulous pendant necklace dating to around 1925-1930. Set within platinum and accompanied by a long 21.5 inch European 0.835 silver chain, wear this beauty over top a slim sweater this fall & winter for the perfect accessory!
Measuring approximately 1.25 inches, the diamond studded & onyx-set 'chevron' or 'arrow' shaped pendant holds a total of 16 Old European cut diamonds and 6 pieces of fancy-cut onyx. The diamonds, averaging 1.60 to 1.85mm total an estimated 0.40 - 0.48ct based on calculations, with a dazzling display of old world sparkle from their Si2-I1 clarity and white G-H-I color. The onyx, with their fancy cuts measure between approximately 2.60mm to 3.05mm. It appears that the top 2 pieces of onyx are either chipped or that perhaps a small piece of onyx is missing. Rather than tamper with the integrity of the piece, we've not had this onyx replaced as it will likely be a tough job replacing such fancy-cut stones, and the chips aren't so obvious that they detract from the pendant. A jeweler could however perhaps set a different gem in that space - maybe another diamond, or a small emerald or amethyst, popular gemstones of the Art Deco era. We have accounted for this loss of onyx in our price which would be considerably higher if it were in perfect condition.
Hanging from the diamond & onyx segment is a large 14.5mm long (over 1/2 inch) teardrop-shaped cultured pearl. It has a stunning golden peach tone, with a smooth and shining luster showing only very small signs of age. This pendant is as every bit beautiful as it is fashionable - you can't beat onyx, pearls & diamonds for a sharp yet elegant look.
Unmarked, the pendant itself has been acid-tested and tests as platinum, standard in the Art Deco period. The piece definitely appears to be handmade and could be of European origin, based on the hand-detailing, and the 0.835 silver chain that accompanies it. We acquired the piece from an antique dealer in England, so European origin is probable. 835 silver was commonly used in Germany, Netherlands (still today), Belgium, Austria & Portugal (also still currently), so we can assume the pendant originated from somewhere in that region. The chain measures a long 21.5 inches, and the addition of the pendant brings the overall length to about 23 inches. Together, the pendant & chain weigh 5.9 grams.
Whether it's sweater-weather for you and you're needing a new winter look, or you want that perfect long necklace to fit your deep-cut dress for that next fancy occasion, this pendant fits it all. She'll also make an absolutely stunning wedding-day necklace if your color palette is the ever-popular 'black & white Art Deco/Gatsby' theme! Of course, you can change the chain out too if you'd rather white gold or platinum, or a shorter length (a short 15-16 inch would be amazing!). We can also help find you the perfect gold or platinum chain if that's what you wish!
