Antique Edwardian jewelry ... how can you not love it? From its designs to the darling seed pearls so popular at the time to its uniqueness ... all the things that sets it apart from the almost sterile sameness of what we find in shops today.
Take this incredibly beautiful 15ct necklace: 8 stars holding 5 seed pearls each, surround a 5/8" centre star (the sun?) with another 24 seed pearls. This "double starburst" design was so popular in the Edwardian era. I've seen many stickpins and brooches with the sun/moon/star motifs, but far fewer in necklaces. What a divine find then is this necklace!
But it's not just a necklace either: the pendant section is actually a detachable brooch, attached at present via a loop on the back of the 6 petalled flower above the starburst. This makes me wonder if the starburst is original to the necklace. Possibly not. But it not, then it's a marriage that truly works.
Now, in the main part of the necklace then, we have even more seed pearls. Some of these are so tiny you have to marvel at what a task it must have been to put them there. I suspect one or two may have been replaced over the years, but it's been well done. Just look how beautiful the original necklace was all by itself with those flowerlets interwoven through the chain. Stunning!
What it's even more amazing to me, is the glitter that emanates from this combination of seed pearls and 15ct gold. You'd think you're looking at tiny diamonds. Speaking of diamonds, there is a small, old cut diamond right at the center of that large star in the brooch/pendant but I must point out, as I just discovered when writing up this ad, that that diamond has been chipped. I couldn't see it at all until I looked through a loupe. Because you can't see it with naked eye, it doesn't take away from the look of the necklace but it wouldn't cost that much to have it replaced. We've adjusted our price to allow for this flaw.
The twisted rope chain is about 1/16" thick, fits a 14" - 15" neck, and closes with a secure barrel clasp. The brooch/pendant is 1 1/4" in diameter.
Given the delicacy of jewelry like this, we chose not to clean it but even without cleaning it looks stunning as you can see in our photos. Enlarge them and hover over the details. And rest assured if you decide to add it to your collectibles, that this one will be one of you nicest Edwardian pieces.
