Found on London's famed Portobello Road, here is a gorgeous antique sterling silver inkwell (fully hallmarked) - lid is inscribed "GW, 1867 - 1917" - inner lid inscribed "To George Welsh, Esq., from the staff of Harmood Banner & Son, 23rd Nov. 1917." A little research tells me that Harmood Banner & Son was an accounting firm in Liverpool, England. This lovely piece was almost certainly given to Mr. Welsh upon his retirement from the firm. Glass bottom - no insert (though it's a standard size and one could certainly be easily dropped in). Even though the piece is inscribed 1917, the date mark actually dates the manufacture to 1905 in London. Maker's mark shows it was made by the noted firm of Heath & Middleton, Silversmiths. Please note there is one screw missing on the bottom. Measures 4 inches across at widest point, roughly 1 3/4 inches tall. Has a couple of very small dimples from handling and use. A very handsome piece.
