Found in the English town of Newark, this little piece is fresh to the market from an estate. It is known as a "pounce pot" or sander, used on desks to sprinkle a fine, absorbent sand onto signatures or handwritten documents in the days before blotting paper. Bear is sitting on his haunches in a pleading position, looking at you as if to say "PLEASE take this muzzle from around my mouth!" Nicely detailed - has some hallmarks on the bottom that are rather obscured. Dates from the last half of the 19th century. Stands right at 4 inches tall. Pot metal, head screws on well. There is a tiny hole on the bottom, so this is now for decorative purposes only. Would make a handsome desk accessory.
