A beautiful example of pietra dura art, and a touching expression of Christian faith. The design elements of various stones (striated marble or agate for the dove's wings, pure white alabaster for the cross, turquoise for the delicate flowers) are laid into a background of black slate or marble. The frame of 14K white gold is exquisitely detailed. I imagine the flowers are intended to be forget-me-nots.
Condition is very good, but a line runs north to south through the black stone on the half of the brooch. I cannot discern whether this is a scratch or a hairline crack. The line does not extend completely across the brooch. I have owned this brooch for almost 10 years, and the line has not changed in that time. The line is visible only at a certain angle, and I have photographed it at angles to show it clearly.
The frame is stamped "14K" on the reverse. Dimensions are as shown in the photographs.
A precious symbol of faith to be cherished.
