Wonderful figural design in original condition cut steel! Each tiny pellet of steel was hand-cut similarly to the way rose-cut diamonds were, then rivet-attached to a metal base. The tiny facets of steel were designed to catch and reflect candlelight, producing a more subtle sparkle than paste stones. The moon and star design is richly symbolic of many things. Mid-to-late 19th century.
Condition is excellent for antique cut steel. Original pin stem is slightly bent (see pics), and the c-hook clasp appears to have been replaced or repaired (does not affect appearance when worn). A few spots of coloration that may be rust on the back; nothing significant.
Measures a tad under 1 and 5/8 inches in diameter. Slightly convex.
