This fine original Victorian engraving is by renowned French caricaturist JJ Grandville from his Les Fleurs Animees series . Published in 1867 by Garnier Freres, Paris.
Entitled 'Myosotis' (Forget Me Not)..it depicts a very sweet young woman standing on a river bank dressed in a gown of vines and leaves decorated with beautiful blue Forget Me Not flowers. In her hand she holds a small bunch of Forget Me Nots and waves them nostalgically at a passing Steamboat.
Measuring 10 1/2" x 6 3/4" it is an original engraving from 1867 and Not a modern reproduction.
With some age related discoloration lower left, some general soiling and a small soil spot far right it is in good Antique condition.
The hand applied colors are very clear and bright and the sentimental subject is quite charming.
JJ Grandville was born Jean Ignace Isador Gerard (1803-47) and I have more of his wonderful engravings in my shop.
