This fine original engraving is by renowned French caricature artist JJ Grandville and was published in his Les Fleurs Animees series edited by Garnier Freres, Paris in 1867.
Entitled 'Verveine' (Verbena) it depicts a young woman dressed in the leaves and flowers of the Verveine. Behind her lay two prone naked woodland folk.
The Verveine is used in many herbal remedies and is famously grown commercially in Le Puy-en-Velay area of France and its use dates back many centuries, being mentioned as a Tissane by Culpepper in 1652.
Measuring 7" x 10 1/2" the engraving has some age discoloration..mostly lower left, which will frame out. And some adhesive paper tape upper left and right verso..which will not be seen when framed. The Antique condition is good.
As with all Grandvilles the colors are strong and lovely.
Signed lower left Grandville del and lower right Ch. Geoffroy sc. this is an original engraving from 1867 and NOT a modern reprint.
JJ Grandville was born Jean Ignace Isador Gerard (1803-47) and I have more of his wonderful engravings in my shop.
