Original Signed French Grandville Engraving 1852.
This fine original engraving is by renowned caricature artist JJ Grandville from his Les Fleurs Animees series, vol.2, Publisher: Bruxelles, A Delavau editeur, rue de L'Empereur 25. 1852.
Entitled simply 'Cactus' it depicts a delicate pink cactus flower in human form. She is accompanied by other hot house plants in a conservatory and stands as close as she can get to a warming stove. Obviously a French winter was not to my lady's liking..
Les Fleurs Animees were delightful drawings of flowers disguised as lovely maidens, charmingly costumed in blooms and leaves. Often accompanied by an implied social comment of the day, the humor of which we are generally not able to appreciate now. The quality of art however, is timeless.
Measuring 9 3/4" x 6 1/4" it is in very good condition.
The colors are exquisite. This is an original engraving from 1852 and not a modern reproduction.
'This engraving stands as both a beautiful and scarce example of Victorian caricature art' Claude Reyberat~Bibliographique et Biographique~Paris, 1985.
Known by the pseudonym JJ Grandville, the French caricature artist was actually Jean Ignace Isador Gerard (1803-47). He first gained fame in 1828 with his Les Metamorphosis du Jour series of drawings depicting individuals with the bodies of men and faces of animals, but Les Fleurs was known to be his favourite and is today the most widely collected of his caricatures.
I have several more lovely engravings from this series listed in my shop.
