Issued in Spain in 1908 to celebrate the 7th centenary of the birth of James 1st (in 1208), this wonderful antique postcard is titled Barcelona.
It features the King on horseback with pike and shield. Behind him are the dates in Roman numerals 1208-1908. He appears to be riding out of a coin.
Issued by Thomas, Barcelona, the postcard is not postally used.
The condition is good with minor corner bumps. It is signed by the artist very indistinctly lower right.
King James 1st (the Conqueror) was king of Aragon and Majorca, Count of Barcelona and Lord of Montpellier. The son of King Peter 2nd of Aragon James was born into the House of Barcelona in 1208. He was one of the Knights Templar and the first great sponsor of Catalan literature. He died in 1276.
