Original Signed Grandville French Engraving 'Fleche-D'Eau' 1867.
This fine original engraving is by renowned caricature artist JJ Grandville, from his Les Fleurs Animees series edited and published in 1867 by Garnier Freres. It is embelished with hand applied watercolor.
Entitled 'Fleche-D'Eau' it depicts a saucy naked maiden, clad only in vines and buds, with a wonderful dragon fly on her shoulder. She is ankle deep in water and emerging from the fronds of the Arrowhead plant. Several large inquisitive fish seem to be examining her! A fabulous piece of Victorian whimsy.
Les Fleurs Animees were delightful drawings of flowers disguised as lovely maidens. Charmingly costumed in leaves and floral garlands and usually accompanied by small creatures from the animal kingdom.
Measuring 10 1/3" x 6 1/2" the print is signed in the plate by both JJ Grandville and Ch. Geoffroy.
The colors are exquisite. This is an original engraving from 1867 and not a modern reproduction and as such is in very good Antique condition. With no tears or folds it has a few tiny age spots and some minimal age toning of the paper as could be expected from something of this age.
"This engraving stands as both a beautiful and scarce example of Victorian caricature art" Claude Reyberat ~Catalogue Bibliographique et Biographique~Paris 1985.
Known by the pseudonym JJ Grandville, the French caricature artist was actually Jean Ignace Isador Gerard (1803-1847). He first gained fame in 1828 with his Les Metamorphosis du Jour series of drawings depicting individuals with the bodies of men and the faces of animals, but Les Fleurs Animees was known to be his favourite.
I have more wonderful JJ Grandville Engravings listed. From both Les Animees and Les Metamorphosis series.
