Antique Original Signed French Lithograph 'Renouveau' 1897.
Here I offer another beautiful example of Original Art Nouveau design. Issued in a limited edition of 1050
Entitled 'Renouveau' (Revival), it is by Belgian artist Emile Berchmans (1867-1947) and was designed especially for the second issue of L'Estampe Moderne series ~June 1897~
It depicts a Satyr (half man half beast) embracing a naked Fauness in the midst of a forest. The colors are exquisite as with all stone Lithographs from the series.
Printed by Champenoise, who also produced many of Alphonse Mucha's posters, L'Estampe Moderne was a series of original lithographs by the most important artists of the era. Sold on a subscription basis of 4 lithographs per month, the series carried a cover by Mucha.
Signed in the print and with the L'Estampe Moderne 'blind' stamp in the lower right corner. See picture #6
It comes with the protecting original tissue title page stating that the Lithograph was executed by the artist especially for the series. The tissue is creased and does have some losses but as L'Estampe Moderne lithographs are rarely found with the covering tissue it is a wonderful addition.
Emile Berchmans (1867-1947) was one of the first artists from the Walloon region of Belgium to devote himself to posters. He was the son of sculptor Oscar Berchmans and founded the satirical revue ~Caprice.
In fine Antique condition with just a tiny corner edge chipped, the sheet measures 15 3/4" x 12".
Picture #7 is the Alphonse Mucha cover of the original issue and is included for purposes of authentication only and is not for sale.
