By one of the most famous French artists of the 19th century..Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), this rare original poster was created to publicize Jane Avril's performance at Jardin de Paris in Montmartre and has become synonymous with Paris and the Art Nouveau era.
Printed in Paris by Chaix and issued in 1896 in a Limited Edition of 1025..it is part of the iconic collection of reduced size posters in Ernest Maindron's iconic publication..Les Affiches Ilustrees series.
Printed on wove paper it is edited by G Boudet, Paris, measures 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" , is signed centre bottom and is in very good Antique condition.
Using the wonderful stone lithographic process, it was printed in just four colors, red, olive green, yellow and black and the style and colors were heavily influenced by the simplicity of Japanese woodblock prints.
Les Affiches Illustrees was a series of smaller versions of posters by famous artists issued by Ernest Mandron between 1886 and 1896. There were 84 limited edition (1025) color posters in all.
