Original French Grandville Engraving 'Un Lion de Paris' 1842.
Here is another fabulous hand colored engraving from the pen of French caricature artist JJ Grandville. From his original 1842 issue of 'Scenes de la Vie Privee et Publique des Animaux (Scenes from the public and private lives of animals), it is titled..'Un Lion de Paris'.
It features a proud lion, complete with frock coat and top hat. He jauntily carries a silver top cane and is smoking a large cigar. He is accompanied by a smaller feline in a pink coat and blue trousers.
Unusually it is not signed.
Measuring 6 1/2" x 10" it has some age discoloration to the paper but no marks or tears and is in good Antique condition.
JJ Grandville was born Jean Ignace Isador Gerard (1803-47) and is best known for his Les Metamorphosis du Jour series of sketches depicting creatures with the body of an animal and the clothing, face and expression of a human.
