This pretty Powder Compact is a typical example of what every girl carried in her handbag.
Fashioned from brass with a factory turned scroll design on the back and a raised leaf pattern surrounding the cover..the pretty embroidered design features roses in varying shades of pink, set among two tone green leaves and highlighted with gold thread.
The design is embroidered onto fine cream silk under a Perspex cover.
The compact was originally designed to hold loose powder but became more popular when compressed powder refills became available.
The powder puff is marked Coty and is from the same era, but as the compact is unsigned I cannot say for sure if it is a French Coty compact.
I do know it came from my Mother who bought it in UK in the 1950's.
The compact clicks shut firmly and the hinge works well..although one of the hinge bars is slightly out of alignment.
Measuring 2 3/4", with a mirror in very good unspotted condition, the back bears the remnants of a shop label and there are traces of the original powder around the inner edge.
With some loss to the brass shine and an aged patina it is in good early Vintage condition.
