I bought this stunning large ring at a flea market more than 30 years ago and it already had a wonderful aged patina, and dates from mid 20th century.
In the Etruscan Revival style it is a Poison or Pill Box ring with a hinged top under which is a cavity large enough to hold a dose of poison or pills.
Originating in Medieval times (when it was used to good effect to conceal real poison) the style was very popular mid 20th century.
With a round Cabochon cut and set Amethyst surrounded by a fine barley twist decoration at its centre, it is decorated with semi circular convex balls and tiny round balls. The simple band is decorated with two tiny engraved vine leaves.
Marked with a very tiny 925 on the ring band it is also tested as Sterling silver.
Measuring 3/4" across the design and with a depth of 1/2" it is sized 7.5 US or 'P' UK and could easily be re-sized if required.
As previously mentioned it has a lovely aged patina and no visible damage.
The hinge works well and the lid clicks shut securely and the Vintage condition id very good.
