From the epic allegorical poem 'The Fairy Queen' by Edmond Spencer comes this stunning original Art Nouveau era colored French engraving entitled 'Britomart' and executed by the renowned English artist/illustrator Walter Crane (1845-1915).
Signed and dated 1896 lower left it features a female Knight (Chevalier), in full armour..complete with helmet, banner and shield. She sits thoughtfully watching the rolling ocean with the cliffs of southern England in the background. She personifies the virtue Charity, just one of Twelve Virtues mentioned in Edmond Spencer's epic poem written in 1590.
This beautiful illustration was completed from the original water color and issued by Biblioteque des Arts Decoratifs and published by Imprimerie Lemercier l'arts, Paris in 1898.
Printed on heavy cream paper and measuring 11" x 8" (including the margins), the colours are superb and the Antique condition is very good.
