Dating to early/mid 20th century (early Showa era), this simply stunning black silk embroidered Tomesode Kimono would make a fabulous gift for yourself or that special person in your life.
Fashioned from a mid weight pure black silk with a slight sheen to it, it features an amazing appliqued beige/deep cream Onna (female Noh Theatre mask), beautifully embroidered in shades of cream, green, lilac, white, black, crimson and yellow..all highlighted with gold and silver thread-work.
The mask is accompanied by a stunning design of fan, pine leaves and gold and lavender tassels and the design runs around the entire base of the kimono from left front to right front.
There are also 5 Kamons..family crests, with a four petal floral motif, (2 front, 3 back), screen printed into the silk, indicating this unique Tomesode was made for someone from an important family.
With a plain light cream silk lining it would make a real statement displayed on a wall, but is in very good vintage condition and would also make a wonderfully wearable gown.
Traditionally kimono are cut from one continuous piece of fabric and never have any sizing but the measurements are..Entire Width (sleeve-tip to sleeve-tip) 50", Body Width (shoulder to shoulder) 24 1/2", Length 61".
The beautiful silk is in very strong condition and the hand tacking is still in place. With some slight marking on the underside of the collar it has not been dry cleaned.
