Dating to the early twentieth century c1914-18 is this very sweet satin stitch 'sampler' style tapestry.
It depicts the definitive English cosy country thatched cottage set in a lovely floral garden. This form of sentimental embroidered 'sampler' was very popular during WW1, as it recalled a peaceful and gentler time. The design is very atmospheric and of course, completely executed by hand. This is not a machine made work.
In a mixture of divine colored wools, executed in a simple satin stitch, it is presented under a double matt of burgundy over palest creamy peach, in a lovely old gilded frame under glass. The stitching is packed tightly together and there are no 'blank' areas of canvas showing.
The colors range from palest pink through to deepest rose. From off-white through cream to yellow, and all shades of lavender and green..from palest to deep, highlighted with darker shadings of rust and chocolate. A very pretty tapestry.
It measures 9" x 12" and the frame size is 13 1/2" x 16". It has been re-matted for conservation purposes and re-framed in the original gilded timber frame. The dimensions make it easily packaged to ship Internationally.
