Fashioned for the Italian holiday maker on their 'Grand Tour' of Europe this pretty Brooch and Earring set (Demi-Parure) date to c1890, and were very popular with Victorian ladies.
Made in Rome from tiny tesserae (pieces) of colored glass, the design is a mosaic in miniature and the style is referred to as Micro Mosaic...a term coined by early 20th century collector Sir Arthur Gilbert.
Many of these Micro Mosaic pieces are garishly bright in color..but this lovely set are in shades of cool olive green, dark navy and coral..highlighted with a touch of yellow and white. A very tasteful color mix.
Both the Brooch and screw back Earrings have their design set into a pattern of tiny brass barley twists.
They have substantial brass backing and are all original.
The Brooch is round and measures 1 1/2". It has the original pin and an early C clasp in good working order.
The Earrings are oval in shape, measure 5/8" x 1/4" and have their original screw backs.
The brass could do with a good clean. I see no missing mosaic pieces, but as they are all different in size and added to the piece by hand, they will not be perfectly symetrical,
The Antique condition is good.
