This very simple and elegant sterling silver (tested) Irish Claddagh Bracelet dates to the Victorian era.
The traditional central 'hands and crowned heart' motif is uniquely contained inside an oval. I have never seen another Claddagh bangle with the design finished in this way and believe it to be a Victorian era Irish made piece. It bears a tiny set of worn Hallmarks and the only one I can decipher (sort of) is the makers mark which I think is H&H for Hopkins and Hopkins of Dublin.
With a secure original simple hook clasp it has a tiny crack in the centre bottom of the fine oval that surrounds the central design. It is easily fixed by a jeweller and I have taken it into account when pricing. See photos.
With the central design measuring 3/4" x 1 1/4" and a wrist size of 6 1/2" it is designed to fit snugly and will fit most wrists. It has a really lovely deep patina and is an early original bangle in good Antique condition. It would polish up beautifully if that is your preference..but I prefer my pieces to show their age so it will come to you with the patina.
Rich with symbolism, the Claddagh (Fainne Chladaigh) design is traditionally Irish in origin and represents..the Heart for Love, the Hands for Friendship and the Crown for Loyalty.
Worn with the crown facing away from the body, symbolizes the wearer is single with a free and open heart. When worn with the crown towards the body the meaning is that the wearer is in a relationship and their heart is taken.
