By Algiers born French Symbolist painter Lucien Levy-Dhurmer (1865-1953), this beautiful and ethereal work is titled simply 'Eve'.
Known in France as 'The Dream Painter', he is almost unknown outside of France.
The Engraving depicts the biblical Eve in the garden of Eden with the Serpent.
Dhurmer was born in the Autumn and that season influenced most of his life. Many of his works are based on the themes and colors of Autumn and this exquisite example is no exception.
He held his first exhibition in 1896 and this unique work was one of 24 exhibited.
Created from the original (see photo #5) as a Panneau Decoratif and featured in the Gazzette de Beaux Arts, Paris, the colors are rich and luminescent.
Measuring 7 1/2" x 11" (full sheet) and 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" (image)..it has some gradual age discoloration to the outer margin edges.
From the original Pastel and Goauche work (see picture #5), with fine hand applied gilding, it is in very good Antique condition and dates to 1896.
