This lovely Australian Opal Brooch is set in 10ct (K) Hallmarked yellow Gold and was probably crafted in Asia.
It belonged to my Mother-in-Law and she purchased it in Sydney in the 1960's. It is one of several Australian Opal pieces I have listed at the moment.
Australian Black Opals are only mined at Lightning Ridge and are the finest in the world..shooting shards of colored fire in all directions, and this is no exception.
Flat cut with a smooth surface and Cabochon set, the large Black Opal measures 1/2" x 3/8" and is actually a lovely deep blue with multiple flecks of deep rose pink, red, orange, green, yellow etc. With such a uniform multi color this type of Black Opal is known as a Rainbow Opal.
The setting is a stylized flower and leaves with the Opal creating the unique flower.
I have been asked if this is a Natural solid Opal or a doublet or triplet. A solid Opal is as it sounds..a solid Opal. A Doublet is a thin layer of Opal adhered to a black backing to give extra color and depth and a Triplet is the same as a doublet but with a layer of colored quartz on top to add even more color. As I am not a jeweller I have had 3 independent jewellers appraise this Brooch. The first jeweller said it is definitely a Natural solid Opal. The second said that because it is 'flat cut', without removing the Opal from the setting he could not give me a definitive appraisal..but the depth of color, light back and over-all appearance make him almost positive it is a Natural solid Opal. And the third said that the quality of the 10K gold setting and the amount of red inclusions make it almost certain to be a Natural solid Opal.
As I pride myself on the veracity of my listings (and I am not prepared to remove the Opal from the setting) I have listed at a reduced price to reflect the slight confusion in appraisal.
The pin is straight and original to the piece with a very unique safety 'plunge' pin fastener. The entire weight is 4gms.
Measuring 2 1/8" x 1" the Vintage condition is very fine and this beautiful Brooch would make a fine addition to an Opal lover's collection..
