This gorgeous Victorian era Brooch Pin is fashioned from 9ct Rose Gold-wash in a Bar and Horse Shoe design.
Hallmarked 9ct gold-wash over base metal) and N3 it features a lovely large deep red Natural Garnet in a claw setting at the centre. Surrounding this is a Horse Shoe highlighted by 5 graduated seed pearls.
The double bar design is accented with curliques and golden balls and has a fine chain depending from the base with a tiny puffy heart attached.
With the original and working pin and C clasp and measuring 2 1/4" x 1 1/4" (inc. the small heart) it is in very good Antique condition. The only mark I can see is a small dent in the heart.
The Victorians were very sentimental and the designs on jewelry were not for pure decoration..but also had hidden meaning. The horse shoe is usually a token of luck or protection, but coupled with the tiny pearls (which mean tears) this was possibly presented as a token of mourning.
