Antique Venetian Sunset Lithograph 'The Salute' by Whistler c1895.
This is a beautiful and ethereal Antique lithograph depicting a true Venetian scene. A black gondola at sunset, with the outline of the Basilica Di Santa Maria della Salute in the background.
Printed in London c1895 for the iconic Arts Magazine The Studio (see pic #4), this beautiful color Lithograph is by the renowned American artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903).
Whistler was a member of the short lived Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood during the 1860's, and in 1879 he travelled to Venice for a brief commission and stayed for 14 months. It was his most prolific painting period and he finished more than 100 pastels depicting the life, moods and fine architecture of Venice.
Entitled 'The Salute', and taken from one of those pastels, it is printed on high quality stock paper and bears the monogram of The Studio magazine and the name of the lithographer..T.R. Way, lower right.
In a sheet measuring 11 1/2" x 8"..the subject is 8" x 5 1/4" and is in very good Antique condition.
The Studio was a fine arts illustrated magazine published in London from 1893-1964 and was International in concept. It presented the work of artists and designers to a wide audience.
