Original French Limited Edition Lithograph 'Jeune Fille Assises' Signed L'Estampe Moderne.
By the renowned English illustrator, engraver and theatrical designer, Sir William Newzan Prior Nicholson (1872-1949), is this very scarce original French Limited Edition (1050) lithograph from L'Estampe Moderne series.
Dated 1899 it was created especially for L'Estampe Moderne in the simple woodcut style made famous by Sir William Nicholson and is one of the rarest examples of this fine series.
Entitled 'Jeune Fille Assises' and printed on a dark stock paper, it is heavily influenced by the simple lines of Japanese woodblock prints, and features a young Victorian lady sitting down in a dress of faded red and a white shawl..outlined with black.
Sir William Nicholson was 1/2 of the famed Beggerstaff Brothers, who's iconic design studio, opened in London in 1893, was at the forefront of Art Nouveau graphic art and influenced poster design until well into the 20th century.
Based on early Chap book illustrations it is one of the rarest L'Estampe Moderne series lithographs.
Issued in 1899 by C Masson and H Piazzi, Paris and printed by the famed Imprimerie Champenois..it is 'tipped into' a backing sheet bearing the L'Estampe Moderne blind stamp of authenticity lower right.
Signed and dated in the print upper left, it measures 12" x 16" full sheet and the subject is 7 3/4" x 7 1/2" and is in good Antique condition.
L'Estampe Moderne series consisted of 4 limited edition lithographs, issued monthly in a cover by Alphonse Mucha between 1897 and 1899.
Since I began collecting this rare series more than 20 years ago they have increasingly gained in popularity and with the great Museums and Galleries of the world now collecting them, they are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Especially in good condition.
