Rare Original Antique Engraving by JJ Grandville 'The et Cafe' 1852.
From the extremely rare little known Belgian issue of Les Fleurs Animees...1852, comes this beautiful and extremely hard to find hand colored original Engraving entitled 'The et Café' (Tea and Coffee) by the renowned graphic artist JJ Grandville (1803-47).
In exquisite color and fine detail are pictured two elegantly gowned Victorian ladies in the guise of Tea and Coffee. One wears a loose Chinese style gown embellished with tea flowers and leaves, while the other is more 'saucily' gowned in the leaves and beans of the coffee plant. Both are enjoying a fine cup of their brew.
Signed by the artist lower left there are a few small foxing marks in the margin and some slight age wrinkling..all of which will 'frame out'. The Antique condition is good.
Measurements are..6 3/4" x 10 1/3" (full sheet) and the image is 4 3/4" x 5" (excluding the title)
With an introduction by Alphonse Karr and printed by Delavau, Rue des Petits, Carmes, the rare Belgian issue was published in 1852 with a text by Taxile Delord.
From volume II of the 1852 edition..this fine Engraving is page 96 and is hand colored. I am listing another beautiful hand colored engraving from the same rare Belgian edition see NN623.
Born Jean Ignace Isador Gerard, JJ Grandville first gained fame in 1828 with his 'Les Metamorphosis du Jour' series of drawings of individuals with the bodies of men and the faces of animals, but 'Les Fleurs Animees' was his favourite and became his most widely loved series.
