Rare Original Signed French Lithograph 'Beauty' L'Estampe Moderne by Burne-Jones. 1898.
This stunning and rare Original Antique French Limited Edition (1050) Lithograph is my very favourite (and the first I ever collected) of the famed Art Nouveau monthly series L'Estampe Moderne.
By the renowned British Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898) it is a rendering in sepia on vellum, of a beautiful woman's face in profile, entitled 'Beauty'.
Executed as a lithograph especially for the L'Estampe Moderne series, and issued in the series in 1898, it was inspired by the poem 'The Mirror' by Leo Desmarais and was the original 'study' for the face of Mary in one of Burne-Jones most highly regarded nativity works 'The Star of Bethlehem' (1888-92) .
Signed and dated 1889 London in the print lower left, the work is 'tipped onto' a larger sheet with the L'Estampe Moderne blind stamp of authenticity lower right.
Published by C Masson and H Piazzi, Paris and printed by the famed Imprimerie Champenois, it measures 16" x 12".
This is one of the rarest lithographs in L'Estampe Moderne series and the Antique condition is very good.
L'Estampe Moderne series consisted of 4 limited edition original lithographs issued monthly in a cover by Alphonse Mucha, between 1897 and 1899.
When I began collecting this series 20 years ago the lithographs were practically unheard of, but they have gained enormous popularity and the Galleries and Museums of the world all now have them in their catalogues..making it very difficult to find them..especially in good condition.
