German Edition 1956 Picasso Lithograph 'Taureau' Suite Vollard
With the full title 'Winged Bull Watched by Four Children' (and known as 'Taureau), this intricate Vintage Lithograph is dated 1956 verso and is by the hand of one of the world's most famous Modern artists..Pablo Picasso (1904-1967).
Demonstrating Picasso's rare ability to combine narrative with symbolism, the winged creature is part bull, part bird, part woman and shows the artist's mastery of the print medium.
Published in the artist's lifetime as part of the Vollard Suite (First German Edition), it is published by Verlag Gerd Hatje (one of the 20th century's most renowned worldwide art publishing houses) and from the original work dated 1934, in the Colby College Museum of Art.
The Vollard Suite comprised 100 etchings made at a critical time in Picasso's career (1930-37). Ambrose Vollard, a leading avant-garde dealer and publisher, commissioned the work that led to the Suite and hired Richard Lacouiere to print them in 1939. But the outbreak of WWII prevented them from being published until art dealer Henri Petiet purchased the entire Suite in the late 1940's.
Printed on cream velin, with no damage, the Lithograph is tipped onto a fine cream matt.
The subject measures 6 3/5" x 8 2/5", the full plate is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2", and the Vintage condition is fine.
