Original French Grandville Engraving 'Le Louvre des Marionettes' 1844.
From the French satirical book 'Un Autres Monde' comes this wonderful and very rare engraving by JJ Grandville (1803-47). It is Plate #84.
Entitled 'Le Louvre des Marionettes' (Puppets of the Louvre) its subject appears to be about our visual interpretation of what we see as it features several unique paintings on the walls being observed by huge single eyes surrounded by the aids to seeing. Glasses, binoculars, a telescope, magnifying glass and pince nez.
With touches of color it is a truly unique engraving.
Un-signed by Grandville (but definitely by him) and signed bottom right by the engraver Rolget, it was issued in 1844 in Paris by Fournier.
With some slight age foxing in the outer margins and a very tiny top right edge bend it is in very good Antique condition.
I am listing two more wonderful engravings from the same series NN440 and NN443.
