Antique American Steel Engraving c1888 'The Sulamite'.
Signed by Alex Cabanel (1823-89) and dated 1876 in the print..this fine Engraving was engraved by Leopold Flameng and published by Selmar Hess, New York in 1888.
Entitled 'The Sulamite', the engraving was taken from the artist's work in oil on canvas of 1876 by the same name.
It features a beautiful woman from Shulem (Shulamite) and relates to the female protagonist in the 'Song of Songs', which tells of Solomon's love for a Shulamite girl.
Measuring 5 1/2" x 7 1/3" (subject) in a sheet 8 1/3" x 11 1/3" the right hand margin is wider than the left (as shown in pic 3).
Blank verso and printed on hand made paper the Antique condition is very good.
