This amazing original French lithograph is from L'Estampe Moderne series issued in Paris from 1897 to 1899, and is arguably the most sought after of all the L'Estampe Moderne lithographs.
Created exclusively for the L'Estampe series by Dutch Symbolist and theatre designer..Georges De Feure (Georges Joseph von Sluijters 1868-1943) and offered in Issue number 2, June 1897, it was printed by Champenoise, Paris.
Entitled 'Retour' (the Return) it features a stunning young woman surrounded by flowers in the unusual palette of browns and blues. Her exquisite eyes gaze directly into the onlookers eyes as she dreams. In the artists own words it 'evokes a dream of a Princess in a beautiful garden, imagining the return of her lover and so seeing him in her minds eye'.
As with all lithographs from this series, the colors produced by the stone lithographic method are truly amazing.
Signed and dated lower left and bearing the 'blind' stamp of authenticity bottom right, it is in fine Antique condition, with just one tiny loss to the lower right corner.
Measuring 16" x 12" it comes complete with its original tissue cover.
L'Estampe Moderne series consisted of 4 original limited edition (1050) lithographs, issued monthly in a cover by Alphonse Mucha. The original price was 3 francs 50 centimes.
As the great galleries of the world are now collecting L'Estampe Moderne series, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find them, especially in such good condition.
