This rare beauty is one of my favourites among the wonderful original French lithographs in the iconic series L'Estampe Moderne..issued in Paris from 1897 to 1899 in a limited edition of 1050.
Entitled 'Brunnhild' it depicts a shield maiden and valkyrie in Germanic mythology who features in Gotterdammerung..the last of Richard Wagner's operatic Ring cycle.
She is dressed in true Art Nouveau style complete with a stunning belt to hold her magnificent sword. Her rich red hair is crowned with a Viking style helmet.
As with all lithographs from the L'Estampe Moderne series, the colors are vibrant and lovely, but this one goes a step further, being beautifully and individually hand gilded to enhance the rich effect.
Created by French Symbolist painter Gaston Bussiere (1862-1929) exclusively for L'Estampe Moderne series, it comes with its original tissue cover, is signed lower right and also bears the 'blind' stamp of authenticity lower right.
Published in May 1898, it is part of the 13th issue and I happen to have all four of the original lithographs from that issue in my shop at the moment. See NN194, NN301 and RP346.
Measuring 16' x 12" it is in very fine Antique condition.'
L'Estampe Moderne series consisted of 4 limited edition lithographs, issued monthly in a cover by Alphonse Mucha. The original price was 3 francs 50 centimes.
Original L'Estampe Moderne lithographs are highly sought after and this is one of the most beautiful in the series. The galleries of the world are collecting them and they are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially in such beautiful condition.
