By the skilled designer Harriet B Davis is this beautiful hand made Art Deco (c1925) era Black silk embroidered and beaded evening bag.
Her designs were so popular that they were issued by 'Hiawatha' stamped on fabric ready for the keen seamstress to bead and embroider. This is Model 23 and could well have been made by a gifted home seamstress as there is no makers label inside.
On a circular black silk background the design of flowers and leaves has been worked in embroidery threads of burnt orange, yellow, deep rose and pale pink, turquoise and olive. All edged with tiny silver beads.
The fringed decoration is also worked in beads of silver, rust, pink and blue.
The simple curved frame is of dark grey metal etched with a tulip design and the link chain and clasp are in good working order. There are no missing beads.
The bag measures 6" across, the fringe is 2 1/2" and the chain measures 10".
The lining of mustard cotton is simple and intact. It could use a couple of stitches near one frame edge and at the top of the tiny mirror pocket. The outside edges of the black silk (near the bottom of the frame) could also do with a timely stitch or two, but the over-all Vintage condition is good.
A stunning useable evening bag or one of beauty for the collector.
