Rare Original Antique Signed Pen, Ink and Water Color 'Kookaburra with Black Snake' 1912.
Signed and dated 1912 lower right by the early Australian artist Harold Hutchinson, this very special and rare piece of Australiana is an original work in a mixture of Water color, Pen & Ink, on paper board, and came from a large deceased Colonial country estate dating to 1860.
Entitled simply 'Kookaburra' it depicts the king of the Australian bush..the laughing Kookaburra..sitting on a branch of gum tree admiring its recent acquisition. A Black snake!
Kookaburra's are well known for their prowess in the killing of snakes and the Aussie Black snake..while not one of the deadliest..is still very venomous.
I am lucky enough to live surrounded by bush and as I sit here listing this a family of Kookaburra's are gaily 'laughing' outside my window. Hopefully they are not heralding the arrival of a Black snake...although we have found two on the back lawn recently (minus their heads..typical bird kill).
Measuring 12" x 16" it is currently in its original frame under glass, but is sturdy so could easily be shipped without the framing.
On a heavy cardboard, the work is very foxed but otherwise in good Antique condition. I am advised that as the backing is robust the foxing can be removed by a specialist conservator, and I am pricing it accordingly.
