This beautiful Lithograph is a study for the oil painting 'Joyous Summer..Pleasant it was when the woods were green' 1883, by the esteemed French born English Pre-Raphaelite artist Philip Hermogenes Calderon RA (1833-95).
It features a beautiful young woman gazing wistfully into the distance. In her flowing hair she has some summer leaves and berries.
A member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) Calderon was also part of the famed London St John's Wood art clique and a leading member of the Royal Academy of art.
Published in The Art Journal by James Sprent Virtue and Co Ltd, in Sanguine (terracotta color) against a cream background, it is signed centre right and titled 'Fac-simile of (after) a drawing by PH Calderon RA'.
The Art Journal was published monthly in London from 1839-1912 and was the most important art magazine of the Victorian era (see last picture).
Measuring 12" x 9" the Antique condition is very good.
