Unique Mexico sterling silver carved green stone face pin that also has a hidden compartment. Ornate with scroll work and beads form the base surrounding the center stone. Notice the center is raised with the sides being open creating nice dimension.
One can only guess what contents may have been stored inside- pills, perhaps poison, over the years, but I do believe it held a loved ones' photo at one time, due to a bit of glue still present on the back of the stone. The carved stone, probably green onyx, is tribal in nature, a warrior's face or mask.
Excellent early pin ca. 1940's, signed Sterling Mexico J.E. Fabulous dark patina, left uncleaned. Compartment closes snugly. Measures 1 1/2" x 1 1/8".
