Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 - 1882 ) of Portland Maine was an American poet and educator at both Bowdin College and Harvard. This narrative poem is his fictional account of the early days of Plymouth that was founded by the Mayflower Pilgrims. It also covers the courtship of John Alden and Priscilla Mullens who were descendants of the pilgrims as was Longfellow himself.The poem was first written in his personal journal on December29th1857 and was first published on October 16th 1858 by Tucker and Fields, Boston.Brown cloth embossed decorative boards with gilt lettering on the spine house all 215 pages,plus 12 pages of advertisements.It is in very fine condition without marks or tears and only a few ares of minor foxing.Cover, pages and binding are tight and clean and in very good condition.A desirable edition of a major and important piece of American literature.
