Don't judge a book by it's cover is the clue here! Yes,there is damage to the cover but it all stops there. This is a 1893 first edition of Walter Carne's " Columbia's Courtship " a Pictorial History of America. Both the illustrations and text are by Crane. The out come is an epic poem of America's history accompanied by 12 full page emblematic colored lithograph plates. Each lithograph is a feast for the eyes. Walter composed this book for the World's Columbian Exposition and it was published by Louis Prang in Boston in 1893.The twelve plates are titled, Miss America, The Norseman, Christopher Columbus, Spain Conquered, The Englishman, The Dutchman, The French,an, Other Nations,Declaration of Independence, Personification of the United States, Personification of the United states ordering a coach and Presentation of the plan for the World's Columbian Exposition. All plates are in good condition with a light smudge on top left corner that will go unnoticed when framed. The plates measure 11 1/2" x 9". Today this limited edition is quite rare and the hardest to find of all Crane's works and has never been reissued. A collection of these unbound plates sold at auction in 2005 for $1.600.00 Enjoy!
