This is one of my most treasured books in my collection! Published by Scribner & Welford, New York in 1882. It entices the eye and mind from cover to cover. It was written by the French historian Augustin Challamel ( 1818 -1894 )and translated by Mrs. Cashel Holey( a Well known Novelist and journalist at the time whose genre was high society) and John Little.Their collaboration on this edition resulted in a collectors dream. This hard bound edition is covered in a blonde wooden veneer( quite unusual in book binding materials) with tapered edges. The cover has been beautifully hand painted with gold lettering and a lovely hand mirror with peacock feathers.Inside 21 remarkable hand colored full page illustrations and text will take you on a journey the history of fashion in France from the Gallo- Roman period to the present (that being up to 1882,of course). All293 gold gilt edged pages are present, although two illustrations have wiggled loose from the binding. Contents are clean and binding is tight. This is a scarce antiquarian book with the few copies out there in library collections is a true gem!
