Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann was a German Psychiatrist and father. Unhappy with the children’s literature of the day he decided to write his own with illustrations for his son. What came about was a wonderful book with rhyming stories of naughty children with morals and consequences for their behavior. It was original published in 1844 in German under the title of " Struwwelpeter “. The wonderful illustrations were hand drawn and colored by Dr. Hoffmann also. This Early printing, special English edition was published around 1910 by The John C. Winston Co., of Philadelphia. It contains 35 stories with a satire edge, whereas the original edition began with only 15. All story titles incorporate a child's name which makes the story their own. Covered with a deep red cloth cover and gilt image and title. All pages are accounted for with just a piece missing from the blank last back page as shown in photos. Light foxing and only two small stains. The rest is clean and binding tight and sure to bring those rowdy little ones in a more well-behaved manor after all the giggling subsides, that is. Measures 10" x 8".
