This precious Art Nouveau Catholic rosary was especially made for a First Holy Communion. Finely crafted with vibrant orange Mediterranean coral and lustrous gold vermeil. Each beautiful bead is original and in pristine condition... smooth, creamy and gently polished. The gorgeous pater beads resemble “wedding cake” beads that are crafted in silver and covered in gold.
The thick, round a center medal is exceptional in that it can be engraved with the communicant’s initials. The front depicts Jesus offering the host to a praying child with a lovely chalice on the altar. “Ecce Panis Angelorum” is written around the edge. This lovely reference to the Eucharist as the “bread of angels” is from a hymn of St. Thomas Aquinas (Lauda Sion Salvatorem) written for the Feast of Corpus Christi. The phrase is rooted in the Old Testament which speaks of the manna from Heaven given to the Israelites as they journeyed through the desert.
On the verso is a sculpted plaque with a fleur-de-lis at the top and flanked by grapes and wheat. Amazingly, the plaque has never been engraved so feel free to inscribe the recipient’s initials and possibly the date they received this Holy Sacrament. A French boar hallmark is on the bottom bail.
The squared 2-layer crucifix has a raised cuff and is filled with fleurs-de-lis and ornate scrollwork. The molded corpus is beautifully detailed and raised high on the cross. The front and back of the bail have a maker’s mark and French crab hallmark, respectively. Heavy-weight diamond-cut chain separates the decades and is sturdy enough for active prayer... not surprising since this rosary was intended for a young person.
Last but not least is the fabulous crocheted pouch made expressly for safely carrying this precious rosary to Mass or simply keeping it close. By wearing the ring on a (very small) finger, the pouch is naturally tucked into the palm of the hand. Ingeniously crafted, it is fully intact with no broken threads, its only “flaw” a small dark spot that can likely be removed.
This superb devotional is in pristine condition and ready to inspire faith and prayer. Whether you give it to a very lucky communicant or use it to honor your love of the Eucharist, this unique and rare religious ensemble deserves an appreciative new home. Comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
