I can honestly say I haven't met a genuine Czech rosary I didn't love! Typically from the early 1900s, many have an earthy and accessible devotional energy that's quite special.
This gorgeous example is crafted of deep, cobalt blue beads made of pressed glass, some of which have little "ears" extruding from the facets. The pater beads are adorned with simple copper caps engraved with a delicate floral pattern. Although the beads are smallish at 5mm, the o-rings between them create plenty of room for easy discernment during prayer.
At the center is a beautiful shield-shaped medal cast in copper. Within the raised cuff is a graceful and flowing image of the Blessed Mother against a pebble-textured background. On the verso is an ethereal image of Mary as the Sorrowful Mother. Old copper components like this have a unique beauty with smooth, glossy patina and dark traces of verdigris. The chain and bead caps are also copper, as are the bead pins and o-rings. Despite copper being a relatively soft metal, the pins and rings on this rosary are in sturdy and excellent vintage condition.
The stately crucifix is made of brass. It too has rich, dark patina that accentuates its beautiful design. The molded corpus has a nice balance of details and devotional smoothing. On the verso, a small star at the center of the cross is encircled by the word "Czechoslovakia."
This beautiful religious collectible is in excellent overall condition and is best suited for display (especially in sunlight!) and occasional prayer. Comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
