Despite its focus on the Seven Sorrows of Mary, this delightful vintage Catholic rosary is amazingly upbeat and joyful... probably because the pressed white luster glass beads reflect the slightest bit of light and emit a sparkling, energetic glow. Look closely and you can see the mold lines and as you slide them through your fingers, the distinct feel of each bead makes it easy to pray despite their petite size. All beads are original and in pristine vintage condition with no chips, cracks or damage.
The delightful round medals have been gently buffed so they shine with the same exhilarating energy of the beads. Unmarked, testing shows them to be 800 silver. The depiction of the Mater Dolorosa is poignant and well detailed, especially on the large hanging medal. Her sorrowful face is exquisite, with a single teardrop clearly visible as it falls from her eye. Her hands are clasped in prayer as the seven swords pierce her Immaculate Heart, and the crucifixion of Christ adorns the verso. A maker's mark is on the bail and AP, Karo and France are on the face of the medal.
Equally beautiful are the depictions of Mary's sorrows on the back of each small medal. Note that a few medals have dings, some of which may be hallmarks, and the medals are inconsistently marked with different combinations of the above information. Soldered silver chain connects the medals to each group of seven beads.
One of the most popular Marian devotionals, the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows is also known as the Servite rosary, which originated with the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in the thirteenth century. Its configuration includes seven groups of seven Hail Mary beads that are recited in remembrance of the Seven Sorrows: (1) The prophecy of Simeon; (2) the flight into Egypt; (3) the loss of the Child Jesus in the temple; (4) Mary meets Jesus carrying His cross; (5) the Crucifixion, (6) Mary receives the body of Jesus from the cross and (7) the body of Jesus is placed in the tomb. The three beads in the drop commemorate the tears Mary shed for the suffering of Jesus and are said to obtain true sorrow for our sins.
In 1982, Our Lady of Kibeho appeared to seven teenagers in southeast Rwanda, and exhorted people around the world to pray the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows for the contrition of their sins. As this message continues to spread, devotion to the Seven Sorrows continues to grow as well. Who couldn't benefit from the graces inherent in this profound religious devotional? In excellent vintage condition, this one-of-a-kind Catholic collectible and instrument of penance comes with prayer instructions and is boxed and ready for gift-giving.
