This distinctive 15-decade Catholic rosary is smooth, silky, manageably sized, grounding and inspiring. It features 169 lustrous brown coco beads carved from coconut shells and exhibiting natural variations in color and texture. Each bead is double-pinned on copper wire ensuring the strength and integrity of the rosary. Larger round paters are clearly distinguished from the rectangular ave beads to facilitate prayer. All beads are original and in excellent vintage condition.
At the center is a silver plated (tested) scapular medal with subtle details and dark patina. Under magnification, you can easily appreciate the benevolent facial expressions of Baby Jesus and Mary as they clearly offer the "Ste Scapulaire" or "Holy Scapular" to, presumably, St. Simon Stock. This is a rare representation in that it includes St. Simon in the imagery and places Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on the face of the medal. The verso is also unique in that Jesus is holding His Sacred Heart instead of just pointing to it, and His other hand is at His waist instead of offering a benediction. Despite the ubiquity of scapular medals, this one is especially beautiful and evocative, and worthy of meditation.
The simple, squared crucifix adds to the grounded energy of this rosary. It is made of silver alloy (less than 800 purity) with a smoothed, molded corpus pegged flush with the cross. An INRI banner is engraved at the top. The verso is engraved with the words "Seigneur ayez pitie des fideles trespasses." I know the first part translates to "Lord, have mercy" but I'm not sure about the rest. I thought it asked forgiveness for our sins/trespasses but someone else translated the entire phrase to mean "Lord have mercy upon the faithful departed." If anyone knows for sure, please let me know!
With its unique crucifix and center medal and simple execution, it is possible this rosary once belonged to a Carmelite religious or tertiary. Regardless of its origin, it is compact enough to fit in your hand and long enough to drape yourself in loving prayer. This wonderful rosary would make a wonderful collectible or gift for someone wonderful! Comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
