It isn't often I suggest that a rosary be worn like jewelry but if you are inclined to do so, this is a terrific devotional that can serve both purposes. It has a "wild" feel to it in terms of coloration and design and likely hails from the 1960s or 1970s.
It is made of large (8½ mm) spun glass beads in vibrant opaque shades of grass green and white. This creates wonderful swirl patterns and makes each bead unique in size, shape and color. Note that a few beads have what look like pinholes but under a loupe, you can see that they appear to be separations between the colors as the glass cooled and contracted.
Each bead is double-capped and protected with flat o-rings and is fully interlocked to add space between the large beads. Heavy beveled oval link chain surrounds each pater and adds to the "jewelry" aesthetic of this rosary. Please note that one bead is missing one o-ring but since I have not been able to find it again, it's safe to say it isn't very noticeable.
At the center is a figural medal of the Madonna with her head bowed forward in prayer. She is surrounded by an oval cutwork cuff and is selectively gold plated for a beautiful two-tone effect. Likewise the large 2-layer crucifix, whose luster cuts are silver with vermeil selectively used throughout the rest of the design. A nicely molded corpus is set on a cross etched with deep lines at different widths and spacing. The arms of the crucifix culminate in beautiful pointed shields with dramatic scrollwork. Both crucifix and center are hallmarked "Italy," "Sterling" and a third hallmark I cannot discern. The crucifix is also marked "Roma."
This fabulous rosary is great for those who prefer larger, heavier beads to support their prayers (and creaky fingers). It is well-made, uniquely designed and destined to be a topic of conversation should you choose to wear it... it's that beautiful! A joyful and thoughtful gift for you or a loved one.
