What a sweet and feminine organic rosary! Beautifully crafted with sterling silver components, it features delightful slender bi-cone beads made of tagua nuts, also known as vegetable ivory.
The nut of the tagua palm has a creamy ivory-like color and texture that makes it an excellent alternative to animal ivory. The grain is very similar to hippo ivory. Before the introduction of inexpensive plastic buttons, tagua nuts were used to make a large percentage of the buttons in the United States. Vintage tagua buttons are considered collectibles today and some can be found on Ruby Lane.
The sterling on this rosary, including the sturdy yet delicate-looking chain, has dark patina that I did not touch, as it is a nice contrast to the cream-colored beads. The shield-shaped center medal features a full-figure image of Our Lady with her arms outstretched. Powerful rays of light emanate from her fingertips, and she wears a crown instead of a halo. The blank verso is marked “Sterling” with a “CR” maker’s mark I am not familiar with.
The 2-layer crucifix is simply beautiful... literally. The cross has square tips and no cuff, just a geometric design gently engraved at Christ’s hands and at the bottom of the cross. The molded corpus is heavier than many and appears somewhat stocky. The dark tarnish highlights the folds in His drape and crown of thorns. The verso is also marked “Sterling” with what looks like a two-sided arrow above it..
This beautiful Catholic rosary is likely from the 1930s or 1940s and exudes simple Old World elegance. It would be a delightful addition to your collection of religious devotionals or a unique gift for a special woman. Comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
