If you ever wanted to drape yourself in a comfortably elegant Catholic rosary, look closely at this vintage 1940s devotional that combines good looks, great style, and substantial yet balanced proportions.
It is crafted of brass that has aged beautifully with smooth, creamy patina and spots of verdigris throughout. Fancy wired spacers are used instead of chain, and o-rings are used to double-cap each bead and separate the ave beads, creating a luxuriously long length.
At the center is a beautifully contoured medal depicting Mary’s profile illuminated by a rayed background. The verso features a tall Communion chalice with what looks like a Eucharistic wafer overlaid with a cross. This too is highlighted with a rayed design and accentuated with verdigris. The budded or trefoil crucifix has a simple brass base and layer of pearlescent celluloid (or other plastic) through which a brass INRI banner and nicely detailed molded corpus are firmly pegged.
The rice-shaped faux pearls have an ivory tint and wonderful, unearthly glow. They are large and sumptuous, gliding effortlessly between your fingers. I consider them to be in excellent vintage condition with very few scuffs and only one pater bead where the coating has worn away at one end.
Nicely sized and weighted, this religious devotional is a superb example of a lost era. Perfect for prayer and perfect for wear, it comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
